Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (Gla)

Gamma-Linolenic acid or GLA is an anti-inflammatory fatty acid and is largely found in vegetable oils such as hemp seed oil, evening primrose oil, blackcurrant seed oil, and borage seed oil. Other sources include leafy green vegetables, nuts, and breast milk.

Inflammation is essentially a process in which the white blood cells in the body produce substances to help protect us from infections that may be caused by foreign organisms such as bacteria and viruses. Inflammation is of two main kinds namely acute inflammation and chronic inflammation. Acute inflammation is healthy and is required by the body to heal cuts, wounds, and open lesions.

On the other hand, chronic inflammation is a lengthened inflammatory response, which is characterized by the progressive change in the form of cells present at the inflammation site. Chronic inflammation is identified by the simultaneous repair and destruction of the tissues as a result of the inflammatory response.

Chronic inflammation is the root cause of many serious and life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease, etc. All these diseases have inflammatory components common in them.

It is important to note that the diet of a person affects the possibility of chronic inflammation in a number of ways. Amongst dietary components, fat has been the primary factor that has affected health. Fats such as saturated fats and trans fatty acids have been associated with causing obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and cancer, while poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)  have demonstrated an generally positive influence on overall health and well being.

How Does GLA Fight Inflammation?

The linoleic acid in the body produces Gamma linolenic acid. Linolenic acid is an essential Omega-6 fatty acid and is catalyzed by the delta-6-desaturase enzyme. It is then further metabolized and undergoes oxidative metabolism, because of which anti-inflammatory eicosanoids are produced in the body.

When GLA is consumed as a dietary supplement, it gets further metabolized to dihomogamma linlenic acid (DGLA) which then undergoes a reaction called oxidative metabolism. This oxidation reaction is catalyzed by the enzymes cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases so that anti-inflammatory eicosanoids can be produced. GLA and its metabolites, subsequently, influence different gene expressions where gene products and matrix proteins’ levels are regulated and standardized. Therefore, GLA is highly recommended and more than often prescribed to patients of diseases which are primarily caused by chronic inflammation. The anti-inflammatory effects of the GLA help patients of cancer, arthritis, heart disease and respiratory disease among many others.

Colorectal Cancer protection with Vitamin D

As many as 40% of Americans are estimated to be deficient in Vitamin D. This important nutrient is famously linked with bone health—and for good reason. Research shows that Vitamin D helps the body absorb and utilize calcium, which is an essential mineral for bone health.

But the benefits of this vitamin don’t stop there. In fact, new research reveals a surprising link between Vitamin D insufficiency and a leading type of cancer.

Deficiency in Vitamin D Associated with an Increased Risk for Colorectal Cancer

In the June 2018 edition of the peer-reviewed Journal of the National Cancer Institute, a team of researchers determined that people with higher levels of Vitamin D in their blood had a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

According to the statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death for men and women. It’s also the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, affecting an estimated 1 out of every 20 people.

The study in question, titled “Circulating Vitamin D and Colorectal Cancer Risk: An International Pooling Project of 17 Cohorts,” provided strong evidence for the cancer-protective effect of Vitamin D. They also found that people with the lowest levels of Vitamin D were 31% more likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

In addition to colorectal cancer, low levels of Vitamin D have also been associated with an increased risk of many other chronic health conditions, including multiple sclerosis, depression, and diabetes.

It’s Not Just About The Bones—More Surprising Benefits of Vitamin D

Cancer prevention? Sign us up! But this isn’t the only benefits of Vitamin D. The “sunshine vitamin” has also been shown to:

  • Strengthen the immune system, which can help you fight off illness, injury, and disease
  • Improves fetal development during pregnancy
  • Optimizes healthy lung and heart function
  • Helps regulate blood sugar and insulin levels

As mentioned, Vitamin D also strengthens your bones, which reduces the risk of osteoporosis and other skeletal health issues.

Final Thoughts: How Much and How to Get?

Whether you’re at risk for colorectal cancer, your health likely stands to benefit from adding more Vitamin D into your diet.

Perhaps the best way to get adequate Vitamin D is from healthy sun exposure—about 10-15 minutes around midday prior to donning sunscreen (this varies depending on factors such as time of year, geography, and skin color). You can also source Vitamin D from foods such as whole eggs, beef liver, cod liver oil, salmon, trout, and (if tolerable) dairy products such as fortified milk.

Vitamin D is also easy and affordable to take in a supplement. Indeed, supplementation is advised in many cases, since most adults don’t get enough levels of Vitamin D through their diet alone. Vitamin D supplementation is especially important for older people and people who live in Northern climates, where they have less sun exposure throughout the year.

How much do you need? The current recommended daily intake for Vitamin D is around 400–800 IU/day. However, many studies show that consuming higher amounts of Vitamin D—upwards of 2,000 to 4,000 IU per day or more—may not only be safe but optimal for certain health protective benefits, including that of colorectal cancer.

As always, it’s recommended to chat with your physician before starting or stopping any new medication or supplement. Even Vitamin D, which is largely recognized as safe and essential, can become dangerous if consumed at high levels.

But if you’re not currently taking Vitamin D, it may be time to consider adding it to your daily health routine—especially if you have risk factors for colorectal cancer.

Health Benefits of Detoxification That You Need To Know

Detoxification has become quite trendy and popular however, its effects on the body don’t receive the same amount of attention. In order to understand the benefits that detoxification holds, it is important to know what it is and how it works. On a daily basis, we are exposed to numerous toxins that enter our body subcutaneously or through the foods we eat. These toxins can get stored in your fat tissue and other locations. The toxins can have harmful effects such as killing the good bacteria in your gut that helps with digestion, causing constipation and stomach upsets. You may also feel lethargic, tired and experience headaches due to the accumulated toxins.

What is detoxification and how does it work?

Detoxification essentially removes these toxins from the body. This process involves s strict diet plan with vitamin supplements and may also include herbal detoxification regimens. Our body has a natural mechanism in place to rid itself of toxins through the biotransformation in the liver that converts the toxin into a less harmful substance that is then excreted out of the body through urine. A detoxification plan that is followed with utmost discipline allows your organs to rest by taking their load off. It lets the organs such as liver the time to recover and eventually results in a boosted immune function.

Let’s go through some of the benefits of detoxifying.

  1. Boosted energy throughout the day and stress reduction

Most people who go through a clean detoxification process claim that they experience a significant boost in their energy levels throughout the day. This is a consequence of restricting trans-fat, saturated fat, caffeine and bad sugars into your diet and replacing them with vegetables and fruits. Additionally, abnormal levels of the stress hormone cortisol can cause serious problems including impaired liver function. A detox diet can regulate cortisol levels and significantly reduce your chronic or acute stress.

  1. Effective for weight loss

If you have been struggling to drop weight, detoxification can help. The eating habits that you develop during the detoxification process can play a long term, impactful role in keeping your weight in check. The abrupt drop in the number consumed calories will help reduce your weight, but when you maintain a clean diet that is free of bad foods, not only will you continue feeling active but you will also maintain an ideal weight.

  1. Sleep and concentration

Detoxification offers mental benefits as well. The toxins that accumulate in the body can also affect the normal functioning of the brain. If you are experiencing chronic fatigue, find it difficult to concentrate or fall asleep, detoxification can help restore the optimum brain function by eliminating the toxins that cause these difficulties in the first place.

  1. Equipping the body with needed micronutrients

Micronutrient deficiencies can cause diseases and even mortality. Some of the most common diseases linked to micronutrient deficiencies include anemia, thyroid conditions, respiratory conditions, immune conditions and degenerative eye disease. A detoxification diet ensures that your body receives the recommended daily allowance of the essential micronutrients needed by the body. These mainly include phytonutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins.
